A well-known portrait of Nathaniel Stern, literally scanning water lilies in West Bend, Indiana. For his well-known series of digitally-native images, Stern straps a desktop scanner, computing device, and custom-made battery pack to his body, and performs images into existence. He scans in straight, long lines across tables, ties the scanner around his neck to swing over flowers, does pogo-like gestures over bricks, scuba dives to scan rippling coral reefs, or just follows the wind over water lilies in a pond. The dynamism between his body, technology and the landscape is transformed into beautiful and quirky renderings. Stern began producing his performative images in the late 90s, and continues to this day. They have been written about in WIRED, Engadget, Gizmodo, Juxtapoz, and elsewhere. The images produced from the West Bend camping trip pictured here were turned into several series, including his museum installation, Giverny of the Midwest.
