This is Haast Hut, on the Haast Ridge, on New Zealand's tallest mountain, Aoraki/Mt Cook. This is one of the oldest and historic huts in the country that is no longer in use.
This hut is also known as King Memorial Hut because the original building was erected to commemorate the first fatalities on New Zealand's highest Mountain. When the hut was first built, the hut materials were carried by men across the Tasman Glacier and up the ridge, the hut was erected before the beginning of winter in 1916.
Today's haast hut is the third on the site, having been built in 1972 to replace the 1984 model, which was a complete rebuilt of the original!!
Due to this hut being in a dangerous zone and recieves hardly any visitors, the New Zealand government has officially decided to remove the hut completely.
I was so fortunate to be on a Helicopter tour earlier this year and having captured this unique photo before the demolition of this heritage hut takes place!
