A rainy forecast at the Salt Flats in Utah is always a recipe for magic. On this day I set off to drive toward the flats and watched as the radar kept pushing the storm to later, with the chances of rain diminishing by the hour. I arrived at a dark and cloudy sunset with no reflections. Disappointed, I was preparing to leave with only the therapy of a solo drive with my dog and good music gained.
As I gathered my things, I heard the first clap of thunder and decided to stick around. I had never tried photographing lightning before, but armed with my tripod I was ready for the challenge.
At first it was frustrating, the five seconds between each shot seemed to be perfectly timed with the lightning strikes. After several hours of shooting, I was met with an electrifying scene.
The average lightning strike lasts only 0.2 seconds, but this one is infinite.
