In December of 2022, I had the opportunity to travel to Ziro Valley in Arunachal Pradesh, India, to visit with the Apatani. The Apatani are an indigenous tribe and are known for their unique and sustainable agricultural practices, which involve terrace farming and integrated fish farming. They are also recognized for their distinctive cultural practices, including facial tattoos and nose plugs worn by women, and their traditional festivals such as Myoko and Dree. The Apatani language belongs to the Tibeto-Burman family, and their population is estimated to be around 40,000. Despite facing challenges to their traditional way of life due to modernization and development, the Apatani continue to maintain and celebrate their cultural heritage.
