As a child, I grew up watching the iconic yellow ambassador taxis from the top of my terrace in East Calcutta - sometimes the drivers would throw in a little smile here and there when they spotted the little kid in me jump in ecstasy while the others would drive past uncontrived, in search of their daily deal. While the services of Uber and Ola Cabs have pretty much picked up owing to the air of capitalism, the charm of these taxis still remain.
The story is hand-pulled rickshaws is however, not quite the same; while many claim that like the trams, they are quite irrelevant in the fast-paced modern Calcutta. But then they have come as an angel on the water-logged Streets of Calcutta during peak monsoons.
I was lucky enough to spot both of them parked against a YELLOW backdrop which is a natural juxtaposition, yet it subtly depicts the way these transports have unknowingly blended themselves with the evolving lifestyle of the city.
