The second piece in this collaborative collection with Liniika, Fragile Miracles, juxtaposes two styles of line art and uses both fine liner on paper and digital techniques.
Also juxtaposed is the world of men against that of nature. In the world of men, Hemsley captures how we build rigid walls, small spaces to fit our small fragmented lives, ideas and values; if we take the time to study nature, not just exploit for resources, we'd see a way of living in synchronicity with each other and all life.
Liniika chose to incorporate insects because they seem small, often invisible to us yet represent entire worlds; the singular line which connects all aspects of her illustration also represents how all life works together.
We're afraid of spiders and we protect our crops from pests. We spray chemicals to get rid of them and thus kill bees that our world needs... We have forgotten to live in harmony with nature, instead carving the landscape to suit our ideas of progress.
