I stood with my grandfather in this exact spot, just me and him celebrating his 80th birthday and enjoying the view down the coast of Cape Town. One of the best views in the world, on a night that I can't imagine being more beautiful. It would take me years to understand the significance of this sunset. My grandfather was a doctor, world traveler, and the smartest person I knew. He fascinated me with his knowledge of other cultures and that inspired me to see the world. Shortly after our trip ended, he started a battle with Alzheimer’s that would change our lives forever. The effects of this crippling disease were heartbreaking to witness. It was so hard to visit and see him searching to remember who I was. I had made a book from our trip, filled with pictures of the places we visited. Somehow whenever he saw that book, he was able to remember some of those details we shared. That's when it all came full circle for me. This is the power of a photograph. Some could see it as a pretty sunset, others may be inspired to travel, and someone like me could remember the trip that changed my life forever.
