Experience Aoraki under a Stable Auroral Red Arc.
Captured on Sunday 12th May 2024 at 2am while hosting a photography workshop, this moment with the SAR arc over Mount Cook was unexpected. Mount Cook, or Aoraki, is New Zealand's highest peak at 3,724 meters and a well known landmark.
SAR arcs, caused by emissions from atomic oxygen at high altitudes. Observing this coloration extending all the way to the north in the Southern Hemisphere is highly unusual.
