spring mountaineering on mount ida was routine. nothing particular of note, just another day out enjoying nature and moderate adventure with friends in june(twenty seventeen).
the concept for ida came from looking at old photos and wanting to tell a story about my favorite time of the year. the photos captured typical behind the scenes stuff, but what stuck out is the variable terrain. hiking 10+ miles round trip is normal and so is wearing running shoes for the majority of it. the rocky ground in the bottom photo is a stark reminder of the how interesting our setups are. for example, i'll carry my snowboard boots strapped to my snowboard, which is strapped to my avalanche pack.

packing a solid kit is essential. ida is about giving weight to such important equipment. i scanned all of the soft goods layers that make up my spring mountaineering kit. seven of them are clearly visible, a few more are hidden.
for the photos and topo, i used a printing technique that adds life to the emotional side of mountaineering and how memories settle over time. for me, they tend to become a complete blur with the exception of two things. the mood of the day and the feeling of the snowboard descent. the acrylic paint is a spring snow white that i mixed to show to true color of snow so late in the season. it's dirty, it's thicc, it's barely fun at times. if the paint is spring snow, that means the markings are...
