On August 6th, the pursuit of light took me hundreds of miles across Arizona. A decision to drive halfway across the southern part of the state was made in an attempt to chase a storm near Santa Rosa that would eventually go tornado-warned. Towns are sparsely populated in that arid region, and the road network is extremely limited. As sunset approached, my options to approach the storm was at a dead end, and all that was left was this tree struggling for survival in a field that had been scoured bare from giant land redevelopment equipment. The contrast of the cracked soil and blowing dust on the horizon with the mammatus clouds from the edge of the storm is what I found so striking, and I paused to connect with this moment in time, despite being pelted with sheets of dust.
